Generosity Feeds Event

During the first week of my junior year fall semester, I participated in a hunger action event hosted by Generosity Feeds (GF) and the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. The event was held to raise awareness of the 94% of school-aged children in Scranton who are considered food-insecure. Generosity Feeds is a non-profit organization that aims to reduce the effects of food-insecurity by calling on community members to participate in large packaging events to prepare, package, and ship nonperishable meals to children.

On the day of this event, the volunteers accomplished a new high for GF: 25,000 meals. The boxes in the above picture each contain 25 meals... now imagine 1,000 of those boxes. Amazing. This event was a fun and rewarding experience. It was eye-opening to hear that so many children were food-insecure, and they're all right in my backyard. The event sparked a fire for some of us students and lead to more local volunteer opportunities. A student in my class even came up with her own plan to reduce hunger in Scranton and started a school drop-off program where she and the class packaged donated goods and delivered them to the local schools.
